In short…yes!

Now, I might be a little biased as this is my chosen profession. However, over the past 11 years I’ve seen far too many success stories (from my clients to other trainers who I’ve gotten to work alongside with) to think otherwise. Of course, just like any profession, there are some horror stories. As a client you need to do a little digging to make sure you have someone who is competent in leading you to your goals. I’ll write another article about what you should be looking for in a trainer at a later time.

Back to the question at hand. Personal Training, in my opinion, is an investment in your personal health. Hiring a Personal Trainer is a hedge against possible injuries or pricey future healthcare costs. They can help streamline the process to achieve whatever your goals may be, and more importantly, they can help change your long-term behavior to help you stick to a new lifestyle once those changes have been made. I could go on to write lengthy articles about each of those topics (amongst many others) and break down their nuanced topics, details, numbers, etc. But let’s not kid around here. You’re probably looking for a quick article to read to help you in your decision to whether or not you should hire a Personal Trainer. Feel free to glance over this list quickly to get a few ideas, but it’s probably for the best if you read my ramblings under each point.

Let's get down to brass tacks here so to speak and go over some bullet points as to why you should hire a Personal Trainer.

1. Customized Programming > Generic Apps/Programs
A trainer designs workouts around your body, injuries, equipment available and schedule. A trainer worth their salt will be able to spot exercises that will give you great results for what your body needs while at the same time helping you avoid ones that may not only hinder your progress but might actually set you back.

Many people look for a cheaper way to get this done by signing up from someone’s app or buying someone’s generic, one size fits all program. Can we blame them? In this economy?! While it’s tempting to take a more affordable route, you’ll be missing out on the real magic of what personalized training can do for you.

2. Accountability & Motivation
It’s no secret that we as humans prefer comfort. Why go to the gym when you can stay snuggled up on the couch next to your dog? Trust me, I get it, I’m guilty of it as well from time to time. When you hire a trainer, part of what you are paying for is accountability. You set up a time and date to meet with them. The trainer is counting on you to show up just as much as you are counting on them to be there when you arrive. Developing a relationship with someone means you don’t want to let them down and adds a sort of a peer pressure aspect to your time at the gym. No one wants the “Where are you, I thought you were coming?” text right?

3. Good Technique Prevents Costly Injuries
One overly heavy, poorly performed back squat can lead to…well it can lead to some problems. No one wants a herniated disc or a torn ACL now do they? Not to say this will happen if you don’t hire a Personal Trainer immediately. I’m not here to instill fear into you if you don’t. I have seen some nasty things happen in the gym though. Just don’t let it be you. Again, are you really trying to pay for an expensive MRI in this economy??

4. Faster, Measurable Progress
There are studies that show that working with a trainer can give you 2-3x faster gains in strength, plus a significantly higher percentage of fat loss in a relatively short amount of time in comparison to doing it alone. You’ll hit your goals sooner, which keeps your motivation to keep coming back to the gym high. Plus, your trainer will be tracking all of this data for you. Who’s trying to look at another spreadsheet anway?

5. Nutrition & Lifestyle Tips
Good trainers have been doing this for awhile and tend to have the little tips and tricks that go a long way. Need to find a way to get more protein throughout the day? They have something for that. Maybe you need to find a way to de-stress before bed so you can actually fall asleep on time for once, they’ve got you covered. Your trainer is a resource you can and should go to for things like that.

These five points should help demonstrate why hiring a Personal Trainer is actually worth your time and hard earned money. Not to mention other things like time efficiency, long term behavior change, improved mood and work performance, avoiding future medical costs from poor health and the long list of other things that could be mentioned.

Bottom line: A good trainer isn’t an expense! It’s an accelerator and an investment for your health, your time, and money saved down the road!
